Month: December 2023
Drive through any neighborhood and youre bound to see at least one house or business building with solar panels on one side of the roof. Go home and do a little research and youll find that solar panels can be quite expensive to install on your own. The good news for those who are particularly eco-conscious is there are several different government funding programs that can either completely cover or significantly offset the costs.
HUDs Green Retrofit Program
HUD offers both grants and loans through the Green Retrofit Program, especially for multi-family dwellings. The property in question will undergo both financial and physical examination to make sure it is properly preserved and meets financial qualifications. Any grant money received through the program must be spent within 2 years, so you must be prepared to show proof that youve had solar panels or other energy saving retrofits installed.
Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credit
While not a grant or loan program, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 provided for the reaction of the Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credit. This tax credit allows homeowners to claim a tax credit of up to 30% of the cost of installation for both solar-electric and solar water-heating equipment. Property owners can apply this credit to any owned property, whether it is the primary residence or not. There is no cap to the 30% limit, but the energy system must provide at least 50% of the homes heating. Anyone who wants to take advantage of this tax credit needs to have the system installed before December 31st, 2016 so that it can be claimed no later than the 2016 tax filing deadline.
Rural Energy for America Program
The Rural Energy for America Program, otherwise known as REAP, is a program run through the US Department of Agriculture. This program was designed to help schools, local governments, state governments, commercial businesses, and other institutions find relief in the installation of not just solar energy technology, but wind, geothermals, wave energy, and other sources as well. The grants, ranging from $1,500 to $500,000, are issued to cover a maximum of 25% of the total cost of each project. While the application deadline for 2013 has passed, business owners, school boards, and government officials should keep this program in mind for future years.
State-Run Grant Programs
Dont forget to look a little closer to home for solar energy grants and credits as well. A lot of states offer their own incentive programs for the installation and use of renewable energy sources, especially since many have goals for the increased use of cleaner energy sources. In Maryland, for example, residents can apply for MEA grants that, in some cases, completely cover the cost on installation. Businesses, non-profits, and government agencies can use the MEA program to apply for loans and grants to either make existing businesses “go green” or to build completely new businesses with renewable energy sources. From a business perspective, the state is also working to create more jobs for individuals working in the “green-collar” industry. The states goal is for the state to be using at least 20% green, renewable energy by 2022. Maryland isnt the only state with clearly defined energy goals, and stacking both state and federal benefits could make the installation of solar energy even more affordable.
Solar systems will provide a renewable source of energy for years to come. While the initial installation of materials may be costly now, the equipment should more than pay for itself and become profitable throughout the course of its usable life. Talk to a home improvement or energy expert if you arent sure about the viability of solar energy in your area. Otherwise, you should seriously consider the benefits of installation and start looking for local, state, and federal funding programs.
No matter where you live, in a townhouse, a lakeside cottage, an urban loft, or a vintage Victorian mansion, there is always a place for a gas fireplace. Convenient and easy to use, gas fireplaces today offer an abundance of design ideas to suit both your lifestyle and the style of your home.
According to the recent statistics, a fireplace is one of the most commonly anticipated features in a modern home. Freestanding gas fireplaces deliver radiant heat to any room in your house from kitchen to dining room and even bedroom, – or outdoors, warming your patio or a backyard. Classic terracotta finish or modern and minimalist brushed steel can give a whole new look to any of your rooms.
Modern fireplaces offer a variety of choices when in comes to fuelling. They may be wood burning, gas- or propane-fuelled, as well as liquid fuelled. The choice is totally up to you. Do you plan to chop wood, or you opt for a convenience of a gas? The kind of fuel you choose is a crucial factor in deciding what kind of fireplace to buy. Consider availability and cost, heat efficiency and your local air pollution standards. There are special regulations that concern the design, verification and labeling of gas fireplaces or imported into the North America.
Gas fireplaces are very energy efficient and can even be used to heat a whole house. With a prefabricated duct system heat travels from one room to another, however, not many households allow for this unless installed during construction. Gas fireplaces, being very easy to use, can be even turned on with a remote control or by the Internet in the new smart home! Thermostats allow for an easy heat adjustment, and with many programmable features you can also change the flame length and intensity.
Gas fireplaces are fuelled by propane or natural gas. Propane can be stored in a reservoir on your property, however, it can be more expensive in the rural areas compared to the wood. But with this type of fireplaces, you dont need a lot of logs to chop and store. In general, gas fireplaces require significantly less maintenance.
The firebox of the gas fireplace is lined with a refractory material that looks like bricks or stones. Instead of blue unappealing flame that most of us expect from the gas, the fireplaces emit completely natural-looking flames that spout from invisible holes in prefabricated ceramic logs. Often these logs form a realistic pile on the bottom of the firebox. Some people prefer the inserts that look like a coal in Victorian-styled fireplaces.
Gas fireplaces are becoming a more and more popular alternative to conventional built-in fireplaces. Gas fireplaces can be as individual as you are. They can be framed in wood, finished in stucco, stone, or tile, thus fitting into most landscapes and home design solutions. Gas fireplace can become a focal point of your backyard or patio, and as any room in your home, an outdoor space must bear the same design concept as indoors. That is why when choosing a fireplace you should think about the environment in which it will be placed and how it will fit with the existing decor. But no matter which technology or functionality you choose, it is largely a design and materials that give your new appliance its distinctive style and make a design statement.
When it comes to protecting your family or your business, you need the best security systems available. But there is no need to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a massive, state-of-the-art alarm system. What you may not know is that so-called “passive security systems,” including window bars and security gates, are actually more effective at safeguarding your property than alarm systems.
Passive security systems are designed to prevent entry, keeping intruders out of your building by blocking windows and doors with security screens. And unlike burglar alarms that only activate after a prowler has entered your home or business, passive security systems stop them from getting into the building at all! Also known as burglar bars, passive security systems provide residential safety in marginal neighborhoods, protection for business inventory and infrastructure, and defense against theft, vandalism, and other crimes.
Most security experts recommend security bar installation for both windows and doors, especially those on ground level. These security precautions work best when all possible access points have burglar bars installed. Components of a passive security system may include some or all of the following:
Window bars
Security gates
Window well grates
Burglar bars
Keep in mind that security bars and grates dont have to be ugly or utilitarian in appearance. There is a wide selection of ornamental window gratings and door gates available to protect your home or business without compromising aesthetics.
Some homeowners have concerns about window burglar bars preventing exit during an emergency (like in the event of a house fire), but by law, all window security bars installed on sleeping spaces must have emergency releases. This enables you and your family to escape in an emergency, while still keeping intruders out of your house. Visit a local home security store or talk to your local burglar bar installer for information on the various window bar models and their emergency escape features.
One passive security measure that building owners frequently overlook is boarding up windows. Ideal for unoccupied properties such as foreclosed homes and vacant commercial spaces, window board ups prevent entry as well as broken windows. Be sure that you contract a professional window board up service, though; some contractors actually screw plywood directly into your window sashes, irreparably damaging them. A reputable window covering service will take measures to prevent injury to your windows for a safe, correct board up.
As our nation struggles through these difficult economic times, dont let your home or business become a target. Protect your family, belongings, and business by taking security precautions. By having security bars and window grates installed on your home or business, youre preventing thieves and prowlers from entering your building, unlike with traditional burglar alarms. Passive security systems are affordable and effective; stay safe and sheltered with security bar installation.
